What Are the Different Types of TBI?

Yes, there are three main types of TBI:

  1. Mild TBI or concussion is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain the bounce around or twist in the skull, cause chemical changes in the brain, or stretch and damage brain cells. These changes in the brain lead to symptoms that may affect how a person thinks, learns, feels, acts, and sleeps.
  2. Moderate TBI is similar to mild TBI and concussion but can also be caused by a penetrating injury to the head. Symptoms are also similar to mild TBI but can include long-term or life-long health problems similar to a chronic disease and can also result in death.
  3. Severe TBI is like moderate TBI but may require ongoing care throughout life.
